Touring exhibition: Indian Highway, HEART

A powerhouse for contemporary art
Featuring 32 works by 27 artists, Indian Highway is the first large-scale presentation of Indian contemporary art in Denmark. Says Director of HEART, Holger Reenberg; “India is a new powerhouse for contemporary art within the international art scene,” and Reenberg expresses his pleasure at being able to present artists such as Bharti Kher, Subodh Gupta, and Nalini Malani. They belong to a vibrant generation of Indian artists who work across a range of artistic media from painting, sculpture, and photography to installation and video art, reflecting on India’s role as an important player within the global economy.

International co-operation
Indian Highway is the result of a unique international collaboration involving the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art in Oslo, Norway, and the Serpentine Gallery in London, UK.

The exhibition is curated by Julia Peyton-Jones, Hans-Ulrich Obrist and Gunnar B. Kvaran together with Stinna Toft and organised in collaboration with the Serpentine Gallery, London and the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, Oslo, Norway

The highway’s impact on and importance for movement and development is the overall theme of the exhibition. The exhibition title also refers to technology and the information superhighway that has played such a crucial role for India’s financial boom and for the development undergone within the nation’s art scene in recent decades.

The opening of Indian Highway is the second manifestation of the international collaboration between Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, Serpentine Gallery and HEART. The first exhibition was Uncertain States of America in 2007.
